Who knew that Maverick and Goose were talking about webpage loading times back in the 80’s, but we have it on good authority that they, in fact, were.

We’ve already seen Facebook put a premium on loading times with Instant Articles, and while the initiative has been met with mixed results, the motivation was well-intentioned. After all, it’s common knowledge that those crappy bounce rates your site is experiencing is, at least in part, due to your crappy load times.

You know what else? Page speed also impacts your SEO–if there are two similarly capable websites, like Maverick and Iceman for example, the better rank will be given to the faster fighter pilot website.

So, what’s a girl to do? Well, duh. Speed up those load times.

If this is the first time you are reading that page speed is important for SEO then put down the Snickers, turn off Game of Thrones and at least take the baby step of understanding where your website sits in the Grand Scheme of Things.

How, you ask? Simple (well, sorta). First, ask yourself, “Is my website AMPed?” If you don’t have any idea what we’re talking about, just do a quick Google search for Google AMP. You’ll learn in a jiffy that Google is more-or-less insisting that you hop on board with their Accelerated Mobile Pages program. Once you’ve gotten that out of the way, mosey on over to the new AMP testing tool. You’ll find it here: https://search.google.com/search-console/amp

The new tool works on your phone and analyzes all your nooks and crannies to test the validity of your markup. If find out you’re good-to-go, then bitchin! Turn Game of Thrones back on! If you learn that your website isn’t where it needs to be, well, get cracking. You’ve got work to do.

Remember, faster isn’t always better, except when it is, and on the web, it definitely is.
